Police station advice is different
Free independent legal advice is available if you are questioned as a suspect at a police station. It does not depend on passing the court legal aid means test. If you are in custody, ask the police for a solicitor.
Legal aid for court proceedings
Eligibility depends on the type of proceedings, the applicable financial assessment and the interests of justice criteria where required. Relevant factors can include income, essential living costs and family circumstances. Some applicants are exempt from the means assessment.
Crown Court funding may involve contributions from income or capital, depending on the circumstances. Eligibility and any contribution must be confirmed through the applicable assessment.
What might the team ask for?
- The allegation and stage of the proceedings
- Court details and any hearing date
- Information about income, benefits and household circumstances where relevant
- Supporting evidence needed for the applicable assessment
You do not need to enter financial records or detailed allegations into this website. Any evidence required for live work should be requested through an agreed secure process.
Private fee information
This website does not publish a fee tariff. A quote depends on the work, complexity, preparation and representation required. You can ask what is included, what is excluded, whether counsel or expert fees are separate, and how changes to the scope will be handled.
No win, no fee does not apply
This criminal defence service is not offered on a no win, no fee basis. Legal aid and any privately funded work have their own terms.
